Tackling Greasy Heel in Horses: Prevention and Treatment with Pro-Tect

Before & After using NRG Pro-Tect

Greasy heel, also known as mud fever, is a frustrating skin condition that affects many horses, especially during wet and muddy seasons. If you’ve noticed your horse’s legs becoming irritated or scabby, greasy heel might be the culprit.

What is Greasy Heel and What Causes It?

Greasy heel is an inflammation of the skin around the lower legs, appearing as a greasy, scabby substance that can cause discomfort and even lameness. It’s often caused by prolonged exposure to wet and muddy conditions, which weaken the skin’s natural defenses.

Preventing Greasy Heel

Preventing Greasy Heel is the best approach. Several factors can predispose a horse to this condition, including sun exposure, pink skin, and persistently wet or muddy environments that soften the skin on the lower limbs. To help avoid Greasy Heel, keep your horse in a clean, dry environment if possible. Regularly check the lower limbs for any signs of dermatitis, such as swelling or redness, so you can begin treatment early if needed.
